GSM (grams per square metre) is the most important specification when sourcing hotel-grade towels. This guide explains what GSM means and which weight suits each tier of hospitality programme.
When hotel operators and hospitality supply companies source towels in bulk, GSM (grams per square metre) is usually the first specification discussed. GSM is a direct measure of the fabric's weight per unit area, where a higher number means a heavier, denser, more absorbent towel. But weight is not the only variable: cotton quality, pile construction and finishing also affect how a towel performs in a commercial laundry environment.
What does GSM mean for towels?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. For terry towels, it measures the weight of the terry pile per square metre of fabric. A towel at 500 GSM contains more cotton fibre per square metre than one at 400 GSM, making it heavier, more absorbent, and slower to dry. Higher GSM towels also tend to have a more luxurious hand-feel, though durability depends on fibre quality and construction as well as weight alone.
GSM guide by hotel tier
- 400–450 GSM: Budget hotels, hostels, guesthouses, promotional programmes. Lightweight, fast-drying, lower per-unit cost.
- 500–550 GSM: Mid-range hotels, three-star properties, serviced apartments. Good balance of absorbency and durability.
- 600–620 GSM: Four-star hotels, premium hospitality chains, resort properties. Plush feel and strong absorbency.
- 650 GSM: Luxury five-star hotels and spa resorts. Maximum weight and softness; typically combed cotton.
Ring-spun vs combed cotton for hotel towels
Ring-spun cotton is made by twisting and thinning the cotton fibres to produce a strong, soft yarn. Combed cotton goes a step further, removing shorter fibres before spinning to create an even smoother, stronger yarn. For hotel programmes, combed cotton at 550–650 GSM offers the best balance of softness, absorbency and wash durability. For budget hotel supply, ring-spun cotton at 400–500 GSM is a cost-effective option.
